Śląsk Cieszyński ? Teąínské Slezsko
Euroregion Śląsk Cieszyński ? Teąínské Szelsko was established on 22nd April 1998. It is situated along the border of the Czech Republic and Poland from Hrčava and Jaworzynka to Bohumín and Chałupki. The Euroregion encompasses 60 Polish and Czech towns and villages populated by about 650 thousand people in the area of 1400 square metres. Due to its small area it is possible to drive round it within just under a day. During the sightseeing tour you can discern the Euroregion's variety i.e. an over-thousand-metre-above sea level-high mountain peaks covered with wonderful forests contrast with large industrial centres and piedmont and mountain villages with traditional wooden buildings are in contrast to modern cities. The Euroregion as a very interesting and attractive holiday and spa place of great tourist interest provides with excellent conditions for going in for all kinds of tourism.
History and monuments
Śląsk Cieszyński (Cieszyn Silesia) originally belonged to the Great Moravian Empire. Before 991 it was included into the state of Poland and at the turn of 1289 and 1290 the region became an autonomic Duchy of Cieszyn, which in 1327 was incorporated into the Czech Crown territories. When in 1653 the Piast dynasty died out the Habsburg family came into ownership of the Duchy right up until the demise of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918. At that time the area of Śląsk Cieszyński (Cieszyn Silesia) became a bone of contention between ? reborn Poland and Czechoslovakia -
the newly created country. It was settled by the decision made up during a conference of ambassadors in Spa (Belgium) on 28th July 1920, as a result the area was divided up between both countries.
The main attraction of Śląsk Cieszyński (Cieszyn Silesia) is its unique architecture and local customs and folklore. The flavour of wooden cottages and traditional craft and folk customs, which have survived throughout the centuries, allow the visitors "to touch" something which concerns both the present and the past. It is really amazing. In little piedmont villages there are traditional buildings with characteristic wooden roofs and in some of them there are folk costumes exhibitions which are worth of visiting because of their beauty and variety. Small wooden historic churches or newly-constructed modern ones are very often the pride of the villages. We can feel completely different atmosphere visiting market squares of great scenic beauty with old town halls, castles and palaces and monuments of engineering.
Natural environment
The Cieszyn district due to its picturesque and diversified lay of the land is attractive to visitors who can go in for various kinds of tourism all year long. In the southern part of the district there are the Beskid Moravian and Silesian range and the Silesian Beskid Mountains and the Jablunkov foothills. All of them are very popular among tourists both in summer as a destination of walking or cycling tours and in winter they are the perfect places for cross-country and downhill skiing, snowboarding and even for ski jumping. Those who manage to climb the peaks will be awarded with breathtaking panoramas in every directions. Every visitor should spend some time in the following places because of their beauty, fame and marvellous tourist conditions. Two mountains with chairlifts ? Javorový (1031 metres above sea level) and Szyndzielnia (1026 metres above sea level) ? offer perfect conditions for diverse forms of summer and winter sports as well as Kubalonka Mountain Pass (761 metres above sea level) where many hiking routs cross. It is easy to reach Czantoria Wielka Mountain (997 metres above sea level) if you are taken by the chairlift. The magic mountain is well-known from many legends and folk tales. On the northern mountainside of Babia Góra (1220 metres above sea level) the Vistula River has its source. Gírová (840 metres above sea level) is famous for so called 'Čertí mlýny' i.e. rocks concentration and a cave filled with rocks which, as a legend says, was thieves' shelter. Wonderful views of Slovakian part of Jablunkov Mountain Pass can be admired from ©ance where in the Middle Ages there was a fortified settlement defended against the Tatar and Turkish military incursions. The ranges of Velký and Malý Polom (1067 metres above sea level) and Stożek (978 metres above sea level) and Czantoria Wielka (997 metres above sea level) are ideal places to hike or cycle and in winter to cross-country ski. But hiking or cycling is not the only reason for visiting the ranges in summer when mountain forests give us their treasures ? diversity of edible mushrooms and in the forest clearing we can gorge on blueberries, sweet raspberries and blackberries.
The diversity of flora and fauna attracts tourists and visitor to our region. An attentive tourist or a fiend certainly find plants growing only here in Śląsk Cieszyński (Cieszyn Silesia). A green and yellow flowering plant called "cieszynianka" is a fine example of plant that grows only in our region and that is why it was named after it.
Tourism and sport
Śląsk Cieszyński (Cieszyn Silesia) offers wonderful conditions for active leisure enthusiasts. For those who are keen on very intensive active leisure and extreme sports we recommend the Vistula valley as a place to explore and have fun. When you think of less intensive forms of recreation and you are not a thrill-seeker you should visit the Olza, Lomná and Stonávka valleys and admire their beauty. In our region there is a variety of possibilities of accommodation from luxury hotels and pensions to comfortable private rooms and hostels, suitable accommodation can be found to match every taste. Every tourist should try our delicious regional cuisine served in restaurants and inns specializing in it but if you are not an enthusiast of such kind cuisine there is a great number of other restaurants and cafes where you have the perfect dining experiences each time. In Śląsk Cieszyński (Cieszyn Silesia) hikers will find an abundance of trails from easy day hikes to moderately strenuous ones. Both avid bikers and all who just look for a day of fun and recreation should try about a thousand kilometres of biking trails. In winter cross-country skiers will enjoy groomed trails as well as downhill skiers will be delighted going down steep snowy mountain slopes. In the ski area there are lots of ski-lifts for example on Javorový, Czantoria Wielka, Soszów, Stożek and Szyndzielnia mountains. When the weather is fine Javorový and Chełm peaks are the best paragliding destinations in our region. Those who love horses and horseback riding ought to visit studs in Ochaby, Komorní Lhotka, Třinec or Jablunkov. If you want to play golf go to Ropice and to play tennis go to the courts in Ustroń, Cieszyn, Český Teąín or Třinec. Rock climbers should spend time on the rocks near Gírová and in a former quarry "Godula" in Komorní Lhotka. The variety of bodies of water enhances activities like swimming, boating, canoeing and of course fishing. In our region you can take part in such kind activities in the Vistula, Olza and Brennica Rivers and in lakes in Těrlicko and ®ermanice. In almost every town and village of our region there are both indoor and outdoor swimming pools. And the ponds and lakes in the neighbourhood of Navsí, Český Teąín, Cieszyn, Pogwizdów and Chybie are the best places for fishing, we call them fishers' paradises.
